Writing a legend

Our writing goal for this term is to be able to write a legend. We used the book "Stone Age Boy" as our Stone Age inspiration and many different legends to get more ideas.

This week we are going to create a plan for our own legend. After, we will be using the plan to write up the final draft and piece of writing. We will do this in the same way we usually complete our final piece of writing at school.

Lesson 1 (18th May)

To plan a legend

We are going to take our time to think about each part of a legend to have a helpful and clear plan to guide us.

Each day we will complete a different section of the plan.

Today, I would like you to decide if you are writing your own legend or you are retelling "Stone Age Boy" story. Once you have thought of an idea, you can fill in the Who? Where? Where next? section of your plan.

Before you start make sure you:

  • Plan your own legend or re-write the story about Stone Age Boy using your own words.
  • Use the planning template.
  • Include all the features of the legend.
  • Create different characters, creatures.
  • Create and solve a quest for my hero.
  • Use past tense throughout your writing.
  • Include correct punctuation.
  • Base your legend in the Stone, Bronze or Iron Age.

Below you will find a planning template. Don't worry if you can't print off the sheet, you can just create a similar plan on paper.

Lesson 2 (19th May)

To plan a legend

We are going to continue planning our legends.

Yesterday we completed the Who? Where? Where next? sections of the planning grid.

Today I would like you to complete the Why? What goes wrong? Who helps? sections of your plan.

Remember to us interesting sentence openers, 2A and BOYS sentences, prepositions and adjectives to describe.

Lesson 3 (20th May)

To plan a legend

Today we are going to finish off our planning sheet so that we are ready to complete our big write.

I would like you to plan the Where last? Feelings sections of your planning.

Before you finish your planning check if you:

  • Included all the features of the legend.
  • Created different characters, creatures.
  • Created and solved a quest for my hero.
  • Based your legend in the Stone, Bronze or Iron Age.
  • Included correct punctuation.
  • Included interesting sentences like 2A or BOYS, prepositions of time, cause and time, powerful adjectives and sentence openers.
  • Used past tense throughout your writing.

Lesson 4 (21st May)

To write a legend

Today we will be using the plan you created to write up the final draft of our legends.

We will do this in the same way we usually complete our final piece of writing at school.

I would like you to have a look at your plan and write up the first draft of your legend.

To be successful you will:

  • Describe who and where using your character description and your setting description.
  • Describe the problem in your story.
  • Describe how the problem is solved.
  • Use past tense.
  • Use paragraphs.
  • Use different sentence openers, 2A and BOYS sentences, prepositions and adjectives.
  • Use correct punctuation.

If you upload a picture of your writing today, I will reply and let you know if there is anything you can do to improve before your final draft.

Lesson 5 (22nd May)

To write a legend

I hope you have finished writing your first draft, so we can to move to the editing stage of our writing.

I would like you to look back through your work and see if you can make any improvements.

Have you:

  • Used prepositions of time, cause and place.
  • Written a BOYS sentence.
  • Written a 2A sentence.
  • Used past tense.
  • Used full stops, commas and capital letters correctly.
  • Organised your work into paragraphs.
  • Used powerful adjectives to describe your character and setting.

Now, after you have edited your work, you will write work out the final piece of your legend. Take your time, make sure your handwriting is neat and don't forget to skip a line between each paragraph! You can also play some relaxing music to help you focus on your writing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUXEeAXywCY
