Religious Education
Religious Education (RE) Curriculum Overview
Intent
At Moreland Primary School, our Religious Education curriculum aims to:
-
Foster Respect and Understanding: Encourage pupils to develop respect for, and understanding of, a range of world religions and beliefs, promoting tolerance and mutual respect.
-
Explore Big Questions: Support children in exploring fundamental questions about life, meaning, and belief in a safe and reflective environment.
-
Develop Spiritual and Moral Awareness: Help pupils reflect on their own values, beliefs, and experiences, fostering personal growth and ethical awareness.
-
Promote Cultural Awareness and Tolerance: Increase pupils’ understanding of diverse cultural traditions and practices linked to different religions, including meeting people of different religions, celebrating festivals and visiting places of worship.
-
Support Social Cohesion: Equip pupils with the knowledge and skills to contribute positively to a diverse and inclusive society.
This intent aligns with our wider curriculum goal to nurture thoughtful, respectful, and empathetic individuals.
Implementation
We deliver our RE curriculum through:
-
Engaging and Inclusive Content: Teaching about Christianity alongside other major world religions and beliefs such as Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Humanism.
-
Key Themes and Questions: Using thematic approaches to explore concepts like belief, worship, community, and moral values.
-
Interactive Learning Methods: Employing discussions, storytelling, role play, visits to places of worship, and reflective activities to deepen understanding.
-
Cross-Curricular Links: Connecting RE learning with history, geography, PSHE, and global citizenship to enrich pupils’ perspectives.
-
Assessment Through Reflection: Using formative assessments that focus on pupils’ understanding, personal responses, and respect for others’ beliefs.
Impact
The impact of our RE curriculum is demonstrated by:
-
Increased Religious Literacy: Pupils show knowledge and understanding of different religious beliefs and practices.
-
Enhanced Respect and Tolerance: Students demonstrate respectful attitudes towards people of diverse faiths and worldviews.
-
Deeper Reflection and Ethical Thinking: Children engage thoughtfully with big questions about life, values, and morality.
-
Positive Social Awareness: Pupils appreciate cultural diversity and contribute to an inclusive school community.
-
Preparedness for Life in Modern Britain: Students develop skills and attitudes to thrive in a pluralistic society.
At Moreland, we have a diverse community encompassing many cultures and religions. This is reflected in our RE teaching and we follow Islington's Religious Education Curriculum.
