Spanish Curriculum Overview

Intent

At Moreland Primary School, we believe that learning a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social, and cultural experience for our pupils. Our Spanish curriculum aims to:

  • Foster Curiosity and Deepen Understanding: Encourage pupils to explore and appreciate the richness of Spanish-speaking cultures, enhancing their global awareness.

  • Develop Core Language Skills: Equip pupils with the ability to speak, listen, read, and write in Spanish confidently and accurately.

  • Introduce the Spanish Phonetic System: Ensure pupils gain a solid foundation in the Spanish phonetic system, enabling them to pronounce words accurately, read aloud fluently, and decode unfamiliar vocabulary with increasing independence.

  • Support Cognitive and Academic Growth: Strengthen pupils’ memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills through structured language learning.

  • Prepare for Future Learning: Lay the foundations for successful progression to language learning at secondary level and foster a lifelong interest in language acquisition.

This intent supports our whole-school goal of nurturing confident, respectful, and globally-minded learners.

Implementation

We implement our Spanish curriculum through:

  • Planned Progression of Skills: A structured scheme of work in Key Stage 2 that builds progressively on speaking, listening, reading, writing, and phonics knowledge. We use the Language Angels Spanish Scheme to support this.

  • Phonics-Based Approach: Regular focus on Spanish phonics to support accurate pronunciation, word recognition, and spelling.

  • Interactive and Practical Lessons: Use of songs, role play, visual aids, games, and storytelling to bring the language to life and deepen learning.

  • Cultural Context: Integration of cultural content such as festivals, traditions, food, and geography to provide real-world relevance.

  • Cross-Curricular Links: Reinforcing learning through connections with subjects like geography, music, and PSHE where appropriate.

Impact

The impact of our Spanish curriculum is reflected in:

  • Accurate Pronunciation and Reading: Pupils confidently use Spanish phonics to decode and pronounce words accurately and fluently.

  • Improved Language Proficiency: Pupils demonstrate growing independence in using Spanish to communicate effectively.

  • Cultural Appreciation: Children show an increased awareness and appreciation of Spanish-speaking countries and customs.

  • Readiness for the Next Stage: Students are well-prepared for further language study, with a secure foundation in phonics and core vocabulary.

Through high-quality Spanish teaching, pupils at Moreland Primary School develop a love for language learning, cultural respect, and strong foundations in phonetic awareness that will support future learning and communication in a global context.

Modern Foreign Langauge at Moreland

At Moreland Primary School we believe that the learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils.

Learning a foreign language helps them to develop their ability to communicate, including learning the key skills of speaking and listening and it extends their knowledge of how language works. It provides excitement, enjoyment and challenge for children and teachers, helping to create enthusiastic learners and to develop positive attitudes to language learning throughout life.Learning another language gives children a new perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others. The natural links between languages and other areas of the curriculum can enrich the overall teaching and learning experience.

All Key Stage 2 pupils are entitled to foreign language learning in school time. Moreland recognises the value of this initiative and will provide age-appropriate Primary Languages learning opportunities for all children in Years 3 – 6. The focus language taught in our school is Spanish.
